BENEDIKT JANKOWSKI

My
origins

My
career

My
photography

I was born in Switzerland just over 34 years ago and grew up in Rorschacherberg on the beautiful Lake Constance. My parents were very fond of travelling (they still are) and we saw many places worldwide.

Pretty early a big passion of mine became obvious. As my parents were both volleyball players, the love for it was also laid in my lap. I joined my first club at the age of eight and it wasn't long before I was selected for the junior national team.

That took me to new places like Brazil or Puerto Rico. At that time, however, I didn't really have a passion for photography. I was all about the sport and success.

Years later, I realised that I was not cut out for the international volleyball stage. I didn't think I was up to the task, which is why I did my Matura in Austria and then studied translation studies in Innsbruck.

I studied Russian and English and then did my Bachelor's degree. After that, I did my Master's degree in English technical translation with French as a passive language.

My childhood dreams did not come true the way I imagined them back then. I didn't become a palaeontologist or a professional feather collector (yes, I really wanted to be).

But during my translation studies I started my own business and tried to find my niche. Corona put an end to that and so, after meeting my girlfriend Isabelle, I moved from Innsbruck to Ellmau.

After some time I found a job at Containex as a customer service manager. But a year and many considerations later, I wanted to do something that I really enjoy and that is also in my blood.

But I always had an eye on marketing. That's why I applied for a job as a marketing specialist at EGGER and got it.

So you see... I'm super happy with how everything turned out (who knows... maybe I'll become a professional feather collector after all).

Since I've owned a smartphone, I've loved taking photos of moments to immortalise them.
However, my interest in landscape photography only developed after the first lockdown, when every single little trip was an event.

I saw the world with different eyes and started to see subjects everywhere. So I started snapping away with the camera I was most familiar with, my smartphone cam.

A few months later, my parents gave me their Nikon 1 S2 and I took photos whenever I left the house. I edited my photos with the open source programme "Snapseed" and yes, I overdid it with the saturation and clarity - but it was a process.

Then my father gave me his Nikon D610 for Christmas, which I still have today and love very much. It was too heavy for him and I gladly took it because I knew my photography would take a big step forward.

Still, I had problems editing my photos. Snapseed was not enough. Besides, I didn't like my style. So I talked to my photography friends. Step by step, I got closer to the photos I want to take. I'm not quite there yet, but one day I will be.

Everything I know I taught myself, through YouTube, other photographers or just by experimenting. It's a lot of fun and I can't wait to see what comes next.
